Arthur Clinton "Sonny" Simons, 86, of Knoxville, died Saturday, August 25, 2007, at home under the care of Hospice of Frederick County.

He was born August 26, 1920, at Petersville, and was the son of the late Arthur Daniel Simons and Ida Belle Kidwell Simons.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Regina "Jeannie" Reynolds Simons, to whom he was married for 54 years when she passed away in 1994.

He was retired with 20 years on the B&O Railroad as a brakeman and 20 years as chief animal warden of Frederick County. He was also a deputy sheriff of Frederick County.

He was a World War II combat veteran, serving in the U. S. Army, in the European Theatre of operations. He landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. He received several medals including the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of Steadman-Kennan Post No. 96 of the American Legion, Brunswick Moose Lodge No. 1582 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 1136, all of Brunswick.

He is survived by eight children; Gary Simons and wife Linda of Gapland, John "Butch" Simons of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., Richard Simons and wife Sandy of Kearneysville, W.Va., Brenda Simons and fiance Dan of Brunswick, Greg Simons of Brunswick, Diane Simons of Knoxville, Joyce Twigg and husband Mike of Ranson, W.Va., and Jeffrey Simons at home; two brothers, Rudy Simons and Mervin Simons, both of Leesburg, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a special aunt, Genevieve Coates of Petersville and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Ardell Smith, Norma Shamel and Aggie Chandler and one daughter-in-law, Judy Simons.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, with Pastor Robert Maraugha officiating. Interment will be in Samples Manor Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
